Dr. Suryabala Lal is a leading contemporary women's writer in Hindi. She was born on 25th October 1944 in Varanasi Uttar Pradesh. She completed her initial education in Varanasi. In 1963 she married a Marine Engineer. Soon after that she started teaching at the Arya Mahila College in Varanasi. She also started working towards her PhD in Hindi Classical Poetry from BHU (Banaras Hindu University).
Her first story was published in Saarika magazine in 1972. At that time she was the youngest women contributor to the magazine's special women's issue. Her writing career really took off when she moved to Mumbai in 1975 when her husband was transferred there. She published her first novel Mere Sandhipatra in 1977 and it earned her tremendous recognition. In the last three decades of literary contribution she has written more than 150 novels, stories, satire, humour and travelogues that have firmly established her as one of the leading women writers in contemporary Hindi literature. Her work has been published in all leading newpapers and magazines.
A number of her writings have been adapted for electronic media. Amongst the tv series adaptation Palash Ke Phool,Na Kinni NaSaudagarDuaon KeEk Indra DhanushSabko Pata haiRace, and Nirvasit are most prominent. A number of stories have also been adapted as teleplay by All India Radio. Doordarshan Jaipur made 45 min telefilm based on her short story Sazayafta which received the Best Telefilm Award in 2006.
Dr. Suryabala has chaired and participated in various Hindi Literary Seminars at prominent global Universities and state academic councils including:
